Separating Mixtures

Method:

1. Add water to the salt and sand mixture.

2. Shake well until the salt dissolves. The sand does not dissolve.

3. Use the filter paper and the funnel to filter into the beaker.  The salt solution passes through the paper. The sand remains behind on the paper.

4. Put the salt solution in the crucible or the evaporating basin and heat with the bunsen burner. The water is evaporated. White salt crystals will be left behind.

5. You can dry the sand by carefully heating the wet filter paper.

6. You should now be left with separate piles of salt and sand.
