Famous for its ring system, Saturn is the second largest planet in the solar system, with a diameter of around 120 000km. It has a deep gaseous atmosphere that consists mainly of hydrogen and helium. Methane, ammonia, ethane, acetylene and phosphine are also present, as are ammonia crystals.

The temperature of the cloud tops is not far short of  -180° C.

Saturn rotates very rapidly; its day is only 10 hours and 15 minutes long. Its year lasts about 29.5 earth years.

   

 

Saturn has more than 20 moons or satellites.
